NEWS AWARDS “Port of the year award” 2008 Since assuming control of the port of Mersin, following its privatization in May 2007, MIP has achieved considerable success. Container throughput soared by 24% placing MIP as the country’s third largest container port. In this process, MIP consolidated its position as the leading gateway port for traffic moving to and from Southern Turkey. MIP has facilitated the growth in traffic through a substantial program of investment, including the refurbishment of existing container handling equipment and upgrading work to the quayside and terminal areas. Three new mobile harbour cranes have been added. On the landside, more yard space has been paved over and container handling operations have been re-organized. Looking to the future, MIP plans further initiatives to expand capacity to around 2.5 Million TEU a year. This will include the purchase of more quayside cranes, and additional rubber- tyred (RTG) gantry cranes. Also, in order to allow larger vessels to access the port, MIP plans to carry out dredging work.
